Ishant Sharma Faces Penalty in IPL Match
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], April 7: Ishant Sharma, the experienced bowler for Gujarat Titans, has received a demerit point and a fine amounting to 25% of his match fees due to a violation of the IPL Code of Conduct during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday.
On Monday, the Indian Premier League (IPL) issued a statement confirming that Ishant acknowledged the Level 1 offense under Article 2.2 and accepted the sanctions imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.
According to the IPL's announcement, "Ishant Sharma, Bowler for Gujarat Titans, has been fined 25% of his match fees and has also received one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on Sunday." The statement further noted, "Ishant Sharma admitted to the Level 1 offense under Article 2.2 and accepted the Match Referee's sanction. The Match Referee's decision is final and binding for Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct."
The 36-year-old had a challenging outing against the Sunrisers, conceding 53 runs in his four overs, the highest for either team. He was replaced by Sherfane Rutherford in the 13th over of GT's innings.
Throughout the season, Ishant has struggled to contain opposing batters, being the most expensive bowler this season with 107 runs given away in just eight overs across three matches, managing only one wicket.
Despite his costly performance, the Titans managed to limit the high-scoring Sunrisers to a modest total of 152/8. In response, GT captain Shubman Gill showcased his skills, remaining unbeaten on 61 off 43 balls, leading his team to a comfortable 7-wicket victory with several overs to spare. With this win, GT secured their third victory in four matches, climbing to the second position on the points table.
